Wakame Ramen in Mizonokuchi

by Tokyo Terrace on September 1, 2009

IMG_3108On Saturday afternoon, Brad and I spent the day relaxing, blogging, and exploring more of the area around our apartment. It is amazing that every time we go out we find a new, unique section of Tokyo. New restaurants, crazy shops and interesting people seem to pop up every day.

About 10 minutes from our apartment by bicycle is Mizonokuchi. Noodle shops and Izakayas line the crowded streets.

Brad and I hadn’t eaten all day and needed some serious sustenance before doing any real exploration. So, we stopped in the first noodle shop we stumbled upon. Beer and ramen happened to be exactly what we needed to get us back in shape.

Brad ordered something similar to beef curry. This was one of the few spicy dishes we have ever experienced in Japan. Served alongside sticky rice and topped with a soft boiled egg, it was just what Brad needed to fill up his bottomless stomach.

Wakame is the same kind of seaweed that is used in miso soup. This ramen dish was full of the slightly sweet seaweed, along with ramen noodles, pork and thinly sliced green onions.

The best part about the way the restaurant served the ramen was the soft boiled egg you crack over the top yourself. Breaking the yolk and watching the bright orange-yellow seep slowly into the soup is mouth-wateringly delicious.

We will hopefully return to this place where the staff are friendly and relaxed. However, with all of the great restaurants to visit in this city, it is sometimes hard to count on going to the same place twice!

Hi, Rachael–I love your blog and am so happy to see that you are happy to be back and blogging in Tokyo. I’m going to try the clam spaghetti for Gus and me. My favorite spot in our house is the sunny corner of my kitchen table (where my mess resides). You know it well. Have a wonderful year, and we’ll look forward to following your adventures on your blogs. Love to Brad. XXMary

I don’t think I could survive the chili withdrawal!

Hey Rick! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I definitely miss chili and other spicy food over here in Japan. Can’t find a jalapeno to save my life! However, I have managed to make my own chili here to tide me over. Hope all is well!!

Weird – the egg yolks here in Dubai are that really bright orange too – I wonder what the difference is? I was freaked the first time I cracked one of those things open expecting the light yellow yolks of the mid-west…

Allison: It’s true- the eggs are much different here than in the states. I actually much prefer the eggs in Japan than those we had at home over the summer…Thanks for the comment ;)

Hi Rachael, that is some really good looking ramen, and those dumplings look great too. Have you ever made your own dumplings? I think about it often, its so easy to pick up a package of wonton wrappers and mix together anything random left in the fridge for a filling, yet I’ve never done it.

mathildescuisine: The egg is a perfect addition to ramen. It just brings a new element to it that the soup alone cannot provide. SO good!

    Hi Scott!

I have made my own dumplings (and there is a recipe on my blog as well). I don’t do it as often as I should, but I would like to try making my own wrappers in addition to filling. So worth it!

Fuji Mama: There are so many great places in Mizonokuchi- it is hard to decide where to eat there!

What wonderful comfort foods and what a blessing to have the places so close to home. I have a lot of fond memories with ramen, and I loved cracking raw eggs over hot food and mixing things up to get that delightful texture. I love Japanese curries; I experienced those before the more familiar Indian varieties most people are probably used to. It’s all just good, honest food, which I totally appreciate and love.
