I work at FirstGiving, we help nonprofits raise money online by letting their supporters make fundraising pages - and so as soon as we heard about the disaster, we got a fundraising portal up for it. We've got 11 charities participating right now, I think, unless more got added since I last checked. So if people don't just want to donate, but raise money by asking THEIR friends and family, they can go to www.firstgiving.com/japan-disaster-relief and pick a charity to help.

Hi Brie! Thanks for your comment. Great question about how to help displaced pets. Here are a couple links I found by asking around on Twitter. I'll let you know if I hear anything else, but this is a good place to start!

i can understand the difficulty in having to relive the trauma through writing, but thanks for letting us know you're safe and providing links so we can help. i have also been looking for animal rescues to donate to, but am unsure if the ones i've found are safe and if the money will definitely be going to Japan; i cannot help but want to help all the displaced pets as well. stay safe and let us know if we can continue to do anything further to help.
