What’s white, yellow and black all over?

by Tokyo Terrace on October 28, 2009

IMG_5823So, what is white, yellow and black all over? An egg boiled in sulfur water, of course! What? You’ve never done that before? Well, the folks in Hakone, Japan swear by these double stinky eggs. Legend has it that if you eat one it adds 7 years to your life. Can’t hurt to try it, right?

While my little sis was here, we took a trip to Hakone to take in the sights and relative quiet away from the insane metropolis of Tokyo. Trips like these are what keep me sane. It is always a breath of fresh air getting away from the sky scrapers and into nature. Unless that air is full of sulfur. Not so fresh in that case.
IMG_5844So, going back to the eggs… As you can see, Brad was really excited about his egg. These black eggs come from a volcanic area in Hakone where sulfur water is plentiful. Trust me. You can’t miss it. Steamy stinky area just up the hill to your left…

Fortunately the eggs did not taste the way the air smelled. Just normal boiled eggs. With Halloween fast approaching, I thought this would be a great way to kick off my next few posts that will be focused on spooky treats! So, get your favorite scary movie and snuggle up for a few days of frighteningly yummy tricks and treats (including an extra cocktail post!) Oh, and before I forget, the recipe for Black Eggs:
IMG_5826IMG_5841
Black Eggs
Makes 4 black eggs

4 eggs
Vat of sulfur water from a volcanic area in Hakone, Japan (other volcanic areas are acceptable as well but results may vary)

Drop eggs in sulfur water. Plug nose and wait for 5 minutes. Carefully remove eggs from sulfur water, nose still plugged. Allow eggs to cool, then pick off the black shell and eat. Unplug nose. Wait, never mind…plug it again.

*Note: Do not try this recipe.

ha ha! That is gross and wonderful at the same time. Did it taste okay? I’m sure the smell was overwhelming.
Just discovered your blog, and look forward to reading through some of your recipes. Great photos, and your header is really cute. Love the koi.
    Best wishes, Meaghan.

Weird! so how do you get the egg boiled? do you bring an egg, climb over the ropes, and dunk it in there? or do they sell pre-boiled eggs on site?

haha — I love the recipe that should never be attempted! I’ve been to sulfur areas in volcanic craters over in Hawaii. STINKYVILLE. But it’s nature, right? Did not boil any eggs, as I don’t think there was any water, just stinky yellow rocks. Here’s to your additional 7 years!

Oh my . . this post was too funny! At first I thought you were referring to the Chinese Thousand Year Old Eggs (which look even more disgusting once you crack them open, although they are delicious).

I remember when I was in Hakone we took baths in the sulfur water! I think they actually said it would be really good for your skin.

That’s interesting. Never seen anything like that before except on your blog. This reminds me of stinky tofu in Taiwan. Beautiful photos. Your hubby is enjoying the egg.

Luckily, we could buy a little warm package of five eggs (things almost always sold in odd numbers here, “four” is the same word as “death” so that might explain it). I tried to go wading in for a soak, but Rachael stopped me…

They were delish, and as long as I get to keep eating more Tokyo Terrace food for those seven years, it’s WELL worth it for the hubby of the cook.

Since there were five in the bag, we each ate two. Adding fourteen years to the American life expectancy…should be getting close to that very Japanese goal of centenariancy (100 year-old are everywhere here).

Come visit us and we’ll chauffeur you right up to the stinky spot. They were delicious and tasted much like any old Easter-egg…except for the color of death on the outside, that’s not so Eastery.

Jo: Glad you caught that ;)

El: They were so interesting to look at. Totally threw me for a loop! Just taste like normal boiled eggs.

Meaghan: Gross and wonderful is a great way to put it. I think the smell effected the taste a bit, but otherwise they were normal. Glad you found me!

Wasabiprime: Next time you should bring an egg and search for sulfur water! Wait…maybe not…

lisaiscooking: I would like to find a way to replicate the black shell without the sulfur stinkyness… Just imagine eating a boiled egg in a super stinky place and you’ve got the idea!

Jen: Glad you found the humor in it entertaining! There is quite the obsession in Hakone w/sulfur products for your skin. A little creepy I think…
